Cody Gakpo has outlined how Liverpool intend to keep their impressive winning run alive as they prepare to face Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds travel to Selhurst Park looking to extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season and secure a sixth consecutive victory. It’s a quick reunion with Palace, who edged Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield less than two months ago.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com at the AXA Training Centre, Gakpo reflected on the team’s momentum:
“I think we’re in a good moment. We’ve put together a strong winning streak and we want to keep building on it. We know how strong Palace can be – we’ve faced them recently in the Community Shield and the last league game of last season. They’re a quality team, so it will definitely be a tough match.
“For us, the key is to stay focused, play with freedom, and go for goals like we always do. Hopefully that will bring another win.”
Liverpool’s resilience has been a defining trait in the early weeks of the season. Digging deep and pushing until the final whistle has earned them valuable points, and Gakpo believes that spirit will once again be vital against a Palace side unbeaten in their last 17 matches across all competitions.
“Belief is the start of something great,” he continued. “We have strong belief in ourselves and in the team. On the pitch, we always feel that we’ll find that one moment to create a big chance and hopefully score. That’s what we’ll be looking for again tomorrow.
“Of course, quality matters, but sometimes games demand different things – mentality, physical battles, and digging in. We’ve shown recently that we can do that too, and we’re proud of it.”
Liverpool will be without Hugo Ekitike due to suspension, but manager Arne Slot confirmed that Alexander Isak is available to start again after netting his debut goal in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton.
Gakpo welcomed the new No.9’s impact:
“That goal was massive for him and for us. Everyone knows how dangerous he can be in front of goal – he showed that at Newcastle. Hopefully he’ll keep doing it for us. He’s strong both on and off the ball, and we’re very happy he’s here.”
The win against Southampton also brought a setback, with young defender Giovanni Leoni suffering an ACL injury that will sideline him for an extended period. Gakpo offered his support:
“It’s always sad when something like that happens. We’ll be there for him as much as we can and help him through this tough time.”
With belief, form, and unity carrying them forward, Liverpool head to south London determined to protect their unbeaten start and chase another three points.
