In the world of modern football, it’s often the physically strong who dominate the striker position – but not Hugo Ekitike. This young forward has something different to bring to the pitch – a unique blend of technical skill and finesse that’s a breath of fresh air. From humble beginnings on the streets of France to the headlines of Europe’s top clubs, Ekitike’s story is one of slowly but surely making his mark, with patience and a whole lot of talent.
Early Life and Background
Hugo Timothée Ekitike was born on a sunny day in June 20, 2002, in the historic city of Reims, in the north east of France. His background’s a bit of a mixed bag – his dad’s Cameroonian, his mum’s French. But one thing’s for sure – from the word go, football was his passion. Like lots of young lads back in France, he spent his early years kicking a ball around in the local streets, before landing a spot with a local club called Cormontreuil FC, where you can bet he caught the eye of a coach or two.
The thing that set Ekitike apart, even back then, was the way he combined being tall for his age, with having the ball at his feet like he’d been doing it all his life. It’s a rare combination that made him stand out, and in 2013, he began his journey with the youth academy at Stade de Reims – the club that’d help shape his early years as a footballer.
Breaking Through with Reims
It was 2020 before Ekitike finally made the leap to the pro game, signing his first senior contract with Reims. You know the drill – he had to put in the graft, starting out with the reserve team before working his way up to the first team. His big break came in October 2020, the first step on the ladder of his rapid rise.
However, it wasn’t all plain sailing – to get some experience under his belt, he was sent on loan to Vejle Boldklub in Denmark the following year. Now, you might be thinking “that’s a bit of a nothing move”, but trust us, it was a real turning point for him. Playing in a different league, adapting to the local conditions and handling the pressure – all of it helped him grow up as a player, both physically and mentally.
When he came back to Reims, it all clicked into place. During the 2021–22 season, Ekitike was one of the most exciting young attackers in Ligue 1. He had this magical ability to slip past defenders and – and this is key – stay calm and composed in front of goal, which just made him the standout player. He scored some big goals and it wasn’t long before the top clubs started taking notice.
Now, you might be surprised to know that at one point, he turned down a move to Newcastle, choosing to stay in France and keep on developing. Not your typical career move, but it’s clear he’s driven to make it to the top.
Joining the PSG
Fast forward to 2022, and Ekitike made another big move – joining Paris Saint-Germain on loan, with the option to make it a permanent deal the following year. Now, we all know PSG is a club that’s stacked with world class players, but this was a challenge he just had to take on.
At PSG, he got to experience the very best of European football – and that includes appearing in the Champions League. He wasn’t always a starter, but whenever he got his chance, he made it count with some big goals and assists. He also picked up a first major trophy – the Ligue 1 title. And when the loan period ended, the deal became permanent and he stayed on at the club.
That was 2023 – but with such strong competition for places, it’s been a real test of his ability to keep pushing himself to the next level.
Cracking the German Code
That was the turning point in his career when he joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 2024. At first he signed on a temporary loan deal which ended up being a more permanent arrangement. This marked the point where things started to really change for him.
Ekitike quickly found his feet in Germany – he started to feel more confident in his game and just started to click. In the 2024-25 Bundesliga season he popped up 15 times in 33 games and thanks to him, Frankfurt finished a respectable third in the table. He even managed to get a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season – proof that he’s one of the young guns to watch out for in European footy.
Liverpool Bound
Two years on in 2025, he made the massive switch to Liverpool. This one had the media talking with a price tag of around 80 million euros – just how much the club believed in his potential.
Making the jump to the Premier League was the obvious tricky bit, but Ekitike made an instant impression. He started scoring straight away and slotted right into the attack system at Anfield. Because of his versatility he was able to play in loads of different roles in front of goal, which just made him an even more valuable asset.
As well as being a bit of a goal-scoring machine, his work ethic and commitment to being the best player he can be really earned him a lot of praise from coaches and teammates. It was clear he wasn’t just a gifted player, but someone who was putting in the graft to really develop his game.
Pulling on the Tricolour
Ekitike has the honour of representing France with other young stars in the under 20s and under 21s. Then, with his consistent form at club level coming into play, he got the call up to the senior team in 2025.
He made his debut in a World Cup qualifier and then went and scored for France in that same match – just another major milestone reached in his career. Breaking into the French national team is one of the major benchmarks for any young player, especially considering France’s rep for producing world-class talent.

Off the pitch, Ekitike has a reputation for being pretty down to earth. He’s a practicing Muslim and he talks about how his faith has really helped him through tough times – especially when he’s been fasting for Ramadan.
