Sad Note: Trent Alexander-Arnold to Leave Liverpool This Summer as Contract Expires

Trent Alexander-Arnold has officially informed Liverpool FC about his intention to leave the club this summer following the expiry of his current contract.
The 26-year-old will conclude his two-decade-long association with the Reds, having made the decision to leave Anfield when his deal ends on June 30, 2025.
Alexander-Arnold stated:
“I think first and foremost, I want to say it’s not an easy decision and there’s a lot of thought and feeling that has gone into it. I’ve been here 20 years now, loved every single minute of it, achieved all my dreams, achieved everything I’ve ever wanted to here.
“Giving everything day in, day out for 20 years, I’ve got to a point now where I feel like I need a new change, a new challenge for me as a player and as a person. And I think now is the right time for me to do that.”
Alexander-Arnold became part of Liverpool’s Academy at the age of six and climbed through the ranks at youth level before making his senior debut in 2016.
Since then, he has made 352 appearances for the Reds, scoring 23 goals, and securing eight major honours, including this season’s Premier League title.
Speaking directly to Liverpool supporters, he said:
“There’s a lot I would like to say. The main thing is a massive thank you. You guys have been there from the start with me, you guys have supported me, been there.
“I’ve felt the support, the love, everything that you guys have done has never been unnoticed by me, I’ve loved every single minute of it. I hope they have felt that has been reciprocated and that I’ve given everything I could to the club.
“I’m just hoping that we’re able to carry on winning games, the noise [around my decision] doesn’t take away from the fact of what we’ve achieved this season.
“It has been an amazing season. It has been amazing to be part of it and I just hope that everyone is able to maybe not dwell on this news for too long and be able to celebrate what the rest of the lads have done.”
Alexander-Arnold will depart with our full gratitude and appreciation for his invaluable contribution during a sustained period of success.
When asked about the motivations behind his decision, Alexander-Arnold explained that after giving everything to Liverpool on and off the pitch for 20 years, he had reached a point where he felt the need for change—both professionally and personally. “I’ve loved every single minute of it,” he said. “I’ve achieved all my dreams here. But I feel like now is the right time for a new challenge.”
The timing of the announcement was also carefully considered. Aware of growing speculation surrounding his future, Alexander-Arnold chose to delay a public statement until after Liverpool had secured the Premier League title. His priority, he said, was always the team. “I didn’t want to distract the squad while we were pushing for trophies,” he shared. “Now that we’ve won the league and celebrated that incredible achievement, I felt it was the right moment to tell the fans the truth.”
Though conversations were held about a potential contract extension, Alexander-Arnold confirmed that leaving was never about a lack of belief in Liverpool’s future. He praised manager Arne Slot and the club’s direction, noting his full confidence in the staff and the continued pursuit of success. Ultimately, he said, the decision came down to personal growth. “It wasn’t about doubts. It was about what I felt I needed—to challenge myself somewhere new.”
Aware of the disappointment his departure may bring, Alexander-Arnold acknowledged the emotional weight of the decision. As someone who grew up idolizing Liverpool players himself, he understands how deeply supporters feel these moments. “I know people will be angry, upset, even hurt. I’ve felt those same things as a fan. But this was a decision I had to make for me. I’ve given everything to this club every single day for 20 years.”
Looking back on his journey—from the Academy to becoming a Champions League and Premier League winner—Alexander-Arnold spoke with heartfelt gratitude. “The word that comes to mind is love. I fell in love with this club at a very young age, and that love has only grown. I’ve been given opportunities beyond anything I could have dreamed of, and I’ll never take that for granted.”
The recent Premier League title, secured at Anfield against Tottenham, holds a special place in his heart. Having won the title once before during the COVID-hit 2019–20 season, he admitted this time felt different. “To lift that trophy with the fans there—at home—that was always a dream of mine. That moment is right at the top for me.”
As his Liverpool career nears its end, Alexander-Arnold hopes the focus remains on the team’s success. “I hope people don’t dwell too much on my departure. What the rest of the lads have achieved this season is incredible. Let’s celebrate that together.”
In a final message to the fans, the full-back offered sincere thanks. “You’ve been with me from the very beginning. The support, the love—you’ve made this journey unforgettable. I’ve done things I never imagined I could do, and to do them with you has been everything. I’ll always be a Liverpool fan. One day I hope to bring my kids to Anfield and show them where I played, what we achieved. Thank you, truly, for everything
