Throw-back: Meet Lifelong disabled LFC fan honoured at Anfield for his charity work

On Monday, August 17, 2015, lifelong Liverpool supporter John Smith, who lives with a lifelong disability, was honoured with the distinguished ‘Point of Light’ award. The recognition celebrates his exceptional commitment to coaching wheelchair football through Liverpool FC’s official charitable arm, the LFC Foundation.
John’s journey began as a participant in the club’s inclusive ‘Respect 4 All’ programme, where he played wheelchair football for five years. That experience ignited a passion for coaching. After earning his FA Level 1 coaching certificate, John transitioned from player to mentor, now leading weekly training sessions for up to 15 disabled players. His enthusiasm and dedication have become an inspiration on and off the pitch.
Prime Minister David Cameron commended John’s extraordinary contributions, stating:
“For many, overcoming a disability to play wheelchair football is a remarkable achievement in itself, but John has gone even further. His involvement in Liverpool’s ‘Respect 4 All’ programme is helping make football more inclusive. John’s work is truly inspirational, and I am proud to name him the UK’s 317th Point of Light.”
The ‘Point of Light’ award is presented each day to a UK citizen who goes above and beyond in serving their community. Reacting to the news, John expressed his gratitude:
“I was overwhelmed and honoured to receive such a prestigious award. Volunteering in wheelchair football is something I genuinely love, and I’m incredibly thankful to the LFC Foundation for recognising and supporting my potential. I also owe a huge thanks to my parents, who always encouraged me to pursue independence in every way possible.”
