In a football match, there is a competition between two teams and each of the teams are permitted to have a maximum of 11 players actively playing on the field at any time. Among the eleven (11) players is the goalkeeper and the other 10 are positions of outfield players.
These eleven players are what we call starting XIs in football and each of the competing teams can go ahead to keep spares. That is additional players who are on bench during the match, most times they are simply referred to as “bench”.
